Belated Winter Wonderland

If you've been following me on Facebook, you probably know I've had sick kids crawling all over me and consuming my time this past week.  I won't go into the gory details - but believe me, you're not missing out.  This post was started so long ago I can't seem to wrap my mind around where I was when I started writing it....so I'm starting over!

Last week (or was it the week before?), our family took a much needed vacation up in the snowy mountains of Whistler, BC.  My parents have a time share just outside the upper village where they had an extra bedroom for us to use.  We were thrilled with the invite and jumped at the chance to experience some snowy fun with our kids, since Seattle seemed to miss out on anything more than a winter dusting this year.  Just over a four hour drive from our home, (give or take depending on the wait at the border) Whistler was the perfect way to get a break from our routine without breaking the bank.

We left on Thursday morning with our ride packed to the brim and stocked with snacks, cartoons, and books for the littles.  You know, normal road trip material.  Our plan was to take a potty break/leg stretch at my parents' (about a halfway point) and drive the rest of the way together...but they decided last minute to head up early and get in some skiing before we arrived.  It all worked out marvelously as the kids were very into their movie at that point so we just kept on going!  We didn't stop until lunch time, when the kids were complaining about sore bums and mama needed a potty break.  At the first sign of an A&W we pulled over and got out (how very Canadian, right?).

I have some pretty picky eaters on my hands so they didn't eat much more than french fries and some apple juice, but they were excited and ready to get back in the car and go the rest of the way up the mountain to see grandpa and grandma....and more importantly, the SNOW!  I was amazed how much the scenery around us changed in the next half hour.  We went from kinda cold to literally freezing and surrounded by a winter wonderland - it was so beautiful!  We calculated that the last time we were in these mountains was nearly 9 years ago, celebrating 6 months married!  WOAH!

Although SO much had changed in Whistler (to the point it was almost unrecognizable) in the last 9 years, thankfully the condo was simple enough to find.  We arrived maybe 15 minutes before my parents and then the fun began!!!

It didn't take long for us to bundle up and head outdoors into Whistler village.  First stop was the grocery store to stock up on food for the long weekend.  We split up the staples, and while waiting in line to pay, Grandma and Grandma informed us that there was now an awesome playground just minutes from there - how exciting!  The ladies took the kids while the gentlemen brought our groceries back to the condo and put them away.

This playground was seriously awesome!  Although the compacted snow all around it made it quite slick so it wasn't long before the kids were freezing and ready to head back.  We hadn't exactly dressed them for snow play.  So it was back to the condo we went, fixed up a delicious dinner of hamburgers, salad, and chicken nuggets for the littles.  After that, the kids begged us to take them in the pool (indoor/outdoor)...but it was so cold that evening that by the time we got down there they were happy to go in the hot tub instead.

My parents had mentioned wanting to go to the village afterwards, but when we looked at the clock we realized we were already past bedtime AND Cocoa had missed her nap today.  We decided to take advantage of the time away though, and got out the stroller for Hollywood, and I put Cocoa in the Ergo and we headed out into the cold.  We really just wanted to get some exercise and see the village....but we couldn't help ourselves when we walked past the chocolate factory and popped in for some caramel/chocolate covered apples...mmm!  Of course by then, Cocoa had fallen FAST asleep in my arms (after literally fighting me to get her in the Ergo in the first place).  But it turned out it wasn't a problem at all.  When we arrived back at the condo, Hollywood said he was soooooo tired and Cocoa transferred into the pack and play without argument (thankfully we had planned ahead and put their pajamas on under their winter coats before we went out).

The Olympic Rings

My precious SLEEPING baby...these moments are way to rare!!

Back at the condo, she didn't even blink as I took off her winter gear!!!

Sleeping arrangements worked out better than I had imagined.  Grandpa and Grandma, of course, claimed the master suite (it was only fair considering they paid for it =).  It included a king size bed and attached bathroom.  The guest room, where we stayed had a queen size bed and just enough room to put the pack and play for Cocoa Puff.  We probably could have put Hollywood on the floor and tripped over him in the middle of the night, but he was SO EXCITED that the couch pulled out into a bed and BEGGED to sleep there.  He really had to talk us into it... ;)  We also had our own bathroom just next door.

I was a tad concerned about our lil man sleeping on the hide-a-bed because last time he slept in a bed without a railing he fell off at 6am and woke the whole house up screaming.  I put the edge of a chair against the bed when it was pulled out...but he really did great.  Every night we put him down on our bed and then transferred him to the hide-a-bed when the adults were ready to go to sleep.

The following morning, my parents wanted to get some more skiing in, this time at the Olympic Village.  They had heard about a great sledding area right near the lodge, so we decided to follow them up there and do our own thing and then meet back at the condo.  It was totally worth it.  Right at the base of those HUGE ski jumps you see on the Olympics they cut into the hills some great sledding paths.  Most of them were simple slopes, but a couple had jumps (that daddy had to try out, of course).  Much to our surprise, our fearless adventurers were absolutely terrified.  They LOVED the snow, but they did not want to go down that hill a second time.  We still had fun playing in the snow, but it wasn't very long before our little man was in dire need of a bathroom.  We walked up the hill to the lodge, and Cocoa and mommy played in the piles of snow while the boys searched out a bathroom.

After they got back out, they were more interested in climbing the "mountain" (the pile of snow outside the lodge) than they were sledding, but we just had fun with it.  Of course the underprepared parents over here had horrible gloves for the wee one and it wasn't long before she was crying "cooooooolll!!!!"  We talked little mister into going inside, warming up, and getting some lunch.

Daddy ordered mommy and Cocoa some coconut curry soup to split while Hollywood devoured probably the most amazing blueberry muffin on planet earth.  Then it was back out into the snow for a couple minutes before heading back for a nap for Cocoa.

Grandpa and Grandma arrived back at the condo during Cocoa's nap.  After warming up, mom and I wanted to head out and explore the village a bit.  With my husband's blessing, we took off, grabbed some coffee from Starbucks, and walked around.  We found some awesome clothes, but all of it was completely out of my price range.  It was still fun though.  And I found some warm fleece gloves for my baby girl that matched her new winter coat.

When we got back to the condo, we found out Grandpa was starting to feel pretty crummy.  The kids were sad to have to keep their distance from him, but it was for the best.  Whatever he had, did NOT sound good.  After some yummy steaks for dinner, we did the hot tub thing and put the kids down for bed.  Since my dad was in bed coughing his lungs up, mom offered to stay and watch after the kids so we could get out for a little bit!  We weren't going to turn down that offer.  We didn't do anything but walk around and have a good chat, but it was good to get even a short break from the kids and be just us for a bit.  Those days are rare lately.

After a lazy Saturday morning, Grandpa asked if we wanted to walk up to Blackcomb village with them and check out a soup and sandwich shop there for lunch.  It sounded like a good break from PB&J so we bundled up and headed out...Hollywood rode in the stroller (which he is quickly growing too tall for), and Cocoa went back and forth between daddy's shoulders and mommy's arms (her favorite places to be....can I hear a huge "awwwww" =).  Before heading that way though, Grandma wanted to stop into the toy shop and treat each of the kids to a treat.  Hollywood picked out a garbage truck and blue airplane and Cocoa chose a purple My Little Pony that came with a baby butterfly.  Made. Their. Day.  Grandma also bought some dice and a new game for something entertaining to do back at the condo tonight.

It surprised me how busy the shop was at lunch, but it probably shouldn't have.  It was in an ideal location for skiers and snowboarders to take a break and warm up for a bit.  Hubs and I both built an awesome sandwich, which we each shared bites of with Cocoa.  Hollywood refused anything but a muffin, but that was okay.  There was another little baby there that Cocoa was oooing and awwwing over while we ate and chatted.  Afterwards we leisurely walked back to the condo to put our little lady down for a snooze.

During her nap (and Grandpas), we broke out the new game "Pick Two".  It kind of reminds me of a mix of crossword and scrabble....but it was so fun it surprised me!!!!  It was fast paced and just a little competitive.  Hubs won almost every game, not surprisingly, but we all enjoyed it so much!  After Cocoa woke up the kids BEGGED to go into the pool so we headed on downstairs with them.

For dinner, Grandpa and Grandma wanted to take us to a new restaurant in the village, but when we arrived it was so busy they said the earliest they could get us in was 9:30!!!  So we went next door.  G&G got some burgers and Hubs and I got to try some yummy stir fries.  We were all happy.

We took our time heading back to the condo, trying to wear out the littles....it worked!  They were SO ready for bed when we got back.  As soon as they crashed we got back to our games =)

The next morning we had to be checked out quite early so we quickly took showers and got to packing.  But before making the long drive home, we decided to all take one more walk around the village (which mainly led us to the playground for the kids) and stop at a burger joint for lunch.  With tummies full of food and eyes full of tears, we loaded the kids in their car seats, started a movie, and back down the mountain we went.  Hollywood couldn't stop crying, so we promised a stop at the other Grandpa and Grandma's before heading home.  That did it!

There was an insanely long wait at the border which made for some majorly crabby kids.  But a new movie and some snacks mostly fixed the problem.  Thankfully I also had some Mad Libs in the glove compartment for our entertainment.  After we crossed back into the United States, we had a little trouble getting ahold of my Hub's parents...which made me concerned we may have to break our promise to little man.  Thankfully they called us back (they were just outside) and told us to come on over.  This was also about the time that my boy started complaining about a tummy ache and was the start to a long week of disgusting mom duties.  (Enough said, right?)  We ended up staying over there past dinner time waiting for his tummy to settle a little bit.  Our beds were a welcome sight that night.  =)

Alright....so it didn't end on the best note...but it really was a great trip and we are so thankful we took the time to head up into the snow to make some final winter memories!

So tell me friends...where is your favorite winter retreat???

P.S. ALL of these photos were taken on my iPhone, so please excuse the quality.  I was just not in the mood to tote my bulky DSLR around the snowy mountains.  Follow me in Instagram for peeks into our daily routine and follow Cocoa's hair care journey.  For instance, if you had been following me the last couple weeks...you would have had some sneak peeks of these pictures!  =)

California Part 3: Farewell

{Flashback}

Continued from Part 1 and Part 2 of our family road trip to California last May!

On our final day in Cali (*sob*) we woke up in beautiful Los Angeles in our hotel room after a rough night of sleep.  The kids felt fabulous, but it wasn't such a great start to our sleep deprived drive home.  We packed up quickly after getting dressed for church, because it was going to be a 2 hour drive to make it to The Ranch Church in Los Olivios on time.  After finding out that we didn't get a complimentary breakfast at the hotel, we took one last potty break in the lobby and buckled up before swinging through the McDonald's drive through for some coffee and breakfast.  Unfortunately, Hollywood wasn't all that interested in fast food (per the usual) so he downed his milk and sat hungry.  (Stubborn as can be, that little one.)  Cocoa loved the smoothie (and yes, even mama's coffee) and pretty much anything else we could stuff into that little mouth.

We hit traffic as expected, but that wasn't what caused our tardiness.  It was a wrong turn to blame for that.  I'm really bad at following directions....but my husband should know better than to take my word for it too (see how I escaped the blame on that one?!?).  We pulled into the church parking lot at about 5 after (really that's better than we can do at our own church which is an entire 8 minute drive from our house) with Brittany and Selah on the sidewalk showing us where to go.  We stepped out into a sweltering 97 degree weather (a huge contrast from the breeze we felt early morning in LA) and were instantly sweating.  Hollywood wanted no part in the boys' classroom so we just took him into service with us.  The kids did great during worship, but once the sermon started they were DONE.  Too much sitting already that morning, I suppose.  Brittany escorted us to a grassy area where the kids could play, and found some bananas for my hungry little boy.  Ignore the grumpy face from the little mister because he really was quite happy....he just wanted to go to Clay and Parker's house to PLAY!  =)

After service we were introduced to some more of Ian and Brittany's friends and were blown away by their friendliness and support to these two.  What a great community!

Before heading back to the Bentley house, we followed our friends to Saarloos and Sons where we had planned to do a little wine and cupcake tasting (how Californian is that?) but between the overwhelming temperatures and limited shade for my pasty boy and myself, we decided to just purchase some tastings to take home instead.  Brittany chose a great variety of mini cupcakes to share with the fam.  Much to our excitement, on our drive home we witnessed a huge police helicopter in a field....they must have been doing some training or something....Hollywood was over the MOON excited!  There was a sign that said we could go and watch, but there was just no shade out there and we were already feeling faint from dehydration so we voted to skip it (even though that would have been mister's highlight of the trip, I'm sure of it....IF we could keep him from fainting, lol).

At the house, Brittany set up the little pup tent with a blow up pool inside of it.  The kiddos stripped into their undies (and diapers) and set up camp inside with a snack of frozen pineapple.  While the parents enjoyed their wine and cupcakes, the children rotated between the driveway pool party, and the bed for some cartoons.  (Most adorable thing ever).  And let's just add that I forgot how quickly alcohol affects you when it's that hot outside!  LOL!  The temperature kept climbing into the 100's and with 9 people in one small home, there was little escaping it.

We helped with a little more packing, but spent most of the afternoon just relaxing and enjoying company.  At one point Brittany and I did catch Jill and Emmarie (the other little lady from our Ethiopia travel group...wouldn't have been complete without seeing ALL THREE of those little ladies) on Skype!  Still blows my mind how much these girls have grown!!!

Hubs and I decided to start our trek back home around dinner time, so the kiddos could enjoy some cartoons and wind-down time before falling asleep.  The AC in the car was a welcome refuge from the heat, but there were a lot of tears as we said our goodbyes...knowing that it could very easily be years before we saw the Bentley's again.  Before jumping on the highway, we stopped by an awesome little taco joint Ian introduced us to (and I quickly became obsessed with....those were some tradish tacos y'all!!!) and devoured them on the road.

The drive was long and boring, and in all honesty most of the details are escaping me at the moment.  Our sleep deprivation caught up with us FAST as we were trying to drive through the night.  On the trip there we could rotate drivers every 5 or so hours, but we were switching every hour or two on the way back in the wee hours of the night.  It was completely miserable and we were really feeling sorry for ourselves...but we only had ourselves to blame too!  There was thankfully a lot less vomit on the trip back...it was almost completely eliminated from turning Cocoa's car seat around.  Our only incident was somewhere in south Oregon early in the morning.  We were literally pulling off of the freeway after we spotted a sign for Subway (hello yummy breakfast) when we heard that awful and all too familiar noise.  Apparently in our sleep deprived state we didn't notice how fast our ice was melting in our cooler (thanks to the 100 degree weather the day before, I'm sure) and our milk had gone bad.  Poor babe =(  Thankfully Subway was also next to a Safeway where we picked up another pack of baby wipes (yes, we had gone through a Cosco-sized pack already) and some fresh milk.

By lunch time we had made it to Portland.  Although we had hoped to stop and have lunch with some friends, the timing didn't work out...not to mention we were so exhausted and ready to be home that we ended up swinging into fast food once again.  We DID however stop at All God's Children to see our caseworker Kiersten!!!  We hadn't seen her since we started our dossier back in 2010 and she had yet to meet Cocoa!  If I wasn't so tired, I might have remembered to take some photos....but oh well.  We had a great visit and the staff at AGCI got some toddler entertainment before we headed back on the road.

Although it was already raining in Portland, it only got worse as we rolled into Seattle and hit a dead stop in traffic.  Although I mourned the loss of sunny California, I was never so happy to get out of my car!  It was all we could do to unbuckle the kids and plop on the couch for cartoons (yes, after they just spent HOURS watching cartoons in the car....t-i-r-e-d).  I think we even picked up pho for dinner.

It took some time to catch up on laundry and readjust to Seattle life, as expected.  But we had SO much fun in California, and we are SO glad that we took the opportunity to go see our friends.  Thank you Cat, Susan, and the Bentley's for hosting us and thank you Skidmore's for making the drive to hang out with us!!!!  We love you all and look forward to next time!!! =)

California Part 2: Santa Barbara, Solvang, & LA

{Flashback Post}

Continued from this post on our road trip.  Hmm...you know the details of a vacation can be kind of hard to remember 8 months after the fact! ;)

On our first morning in Santa Barbara, we took advantage of the sunshine immediately by heading out to a local park the Bentley's recommended.  There was a huge grassy area for the boys to run around in, big and little playgrounds, a swing set - it was perfection.  Not to mention an ideal spot for some photos of our little ladies together.  Who still seemed a little unsure of each other.  The age, I'm sure, was a factor.

Fun at the playground

Ian captured some of my all time favorite pics of these two

Cocoa playing keep away

I love this one!

Ian and Brittany also drove us around Santa Barbara, getting us familiar with the beautiful city, including some of the lovely beaches.  Although it was quite windy on this particular day, the girls still got some sunning in and the boys went out on the kayaks and enjoyed the waves.  I sooooo wish I had pictures of this lovely afternoon, but the beach was just too windy and I didn't want to risk getting sand stuck in all the little crevices of my fancy pants camera I got for Christmas.  We finished off the evening with a BBQ with their friends and family on the beach - mmmm!

{Tip:} Don't forget to apply sunscreen to yourself after you slather your family with the good stuff.  It might result in a semi-severe burn.

Day two consisted of a trip to the Santa Barbara Zoo!  My kids are always a fan of the zoo, and its even better with good friends.  They got to run around, and burn some energy, and there were plenty of shaded areas for the pasties (mainly myself and my boy....oh right, and daddy).  We packed a lunch to take along and there was an adorable spot with tables and chairs right over the elephants to eat.  The kids thought it was awesome to eat lunch with the elephants!!!

Later that evening Brittany and I ran a couple errands....she had to tie up some loose ends before the move, we got some groceries for dinner, and then we ran to the beauty supply so I could color her hair. I spent the evening giving Ian and Brittany their last haircuts before Ethiopia!!!  The kids played in the backyard with squirt guns and had a blast.  And then the guys made a delicious meal for us all to share.

Notice the garbage bag get-up and washing out the color in her mom's sink!
Nothing like kitchen hair, right? =)
After dinner we enjoyed an evening in the hot tub, splashing around...and then the kids got out the chalk and we "decorated" the driveway while enjoying some ice cream.  What a beautiful ending to a wonderful day!

Day 3 we got a little touristy.  They took us out to the Santa Barbara pier and then we wondered State Street to do some shopping and lunch, complete with a trolley ride for the kids (Hollywood was in heaven).  There was a lot of walking, but it was great exercise.  Only downfall was that every inch of my sunburned skin was stinging.  I did a great job at keeping my kids sheltered and slathered in sunscreen...and I kept a good eye on my husband (his burns were contained to pretty much his face and neck).  But apparently that exhausted all my energy because I was getting sunburn after sunburn on this trip....but really, what could you expect coming from Washington?  My skin wasn't used to all this daylight!

Trolley Ride through Santa Barbara

We had lunch in the afternoon at a fun little restaurant on State street.  Because we dressed the girls in their matching outfits I made for them, people kept passing us gawking at them, and asking if they were twins.  They really did just look PRECIOUS!

Lunch on State Street
In the evening, we got to experience a wonderful authentic Ethiopian meal at their friend's home.  There were several families there and TONS of food!!!  Once again we broke out matching outfits for Se-se and Cocoa (these ones Brittany's grandma made for them, too precious!) and they were a hit!

Saturday was our last day in Santa Barbara, because our fabulous hosts were hosting more guests for the rest of the weekend.  They took us out to breakfast on the beach at a beautiful cafe where we enjoyed omelets, cinnamon rolls, bacon, and coffee.  It was so delicious!  Then we pulled the strollers and bikes out of the back of our vehicles and went for a nice long walk along the beach and headed to a different park.  (Please don't judge the fact that my son doesn't have a helmet...this wasn't planned.  Although the Bentley's had an extra bike for him to use, we did not have an extra helmet.  But I promise he always wears one at home!)  The kids had a BLAST!  The daddies kept speed with the boys while the mamas took it slow with the strollers, hoping for a morning nap.  It didn't work, but we did get the morning dirty diapers out of the way.  Great day for us to forget to pack baby wipes and extra diapers (Brittany stop rubbing off on me you bum!!!  Hahaha!).

Then we went back to Mike and Susan's house to pack up our luggage and clean up after ourselves.  The plan was to stay in a hotel that night, but after the guys were looking the evening before....our only options were pretty spendy.  Since the two older boys were going to their other grandma's for the evening, Ian and Brittany offered for us to sleep in their one bedroom apartment.  At first the idea sounded ridiculous....4 adults and 3 kids bunked up in that small space?  But it also seemed like the most reasonable idea, so we laughed it off and made it work.

Arriving in Solvang
Brittany was really excited because Friday night was their Farmer's Market at the vineyard, complete with wine tasting.  We agreed to try it out, first stopping at the grocery store for some dinner to go.  When we arrived at the vineyard I was shocked how many people were there.  Spread out on picnic blankets eating and drinking, it seemed like the whole town was there!  We were introduced to a ton of their friends, who welcomed us with open arms!  There was a grassy area where the kids got to run and play, and Hollywood made a couple new friends (remember the Bentley boys were at their grandma's).

***Brittany, do you still have those pics you took at the vineyard??  I forgot my camera that day but I know you got some good ones!!  Email them to me if you find them, mkay??? ;) ***

When bed time came, Ian and Brittany graciously offered us their bed, we put Hollywood on the floor and Cocoa in the pack-n-play, and they took the boys' bunkbeds, next to Selah's bed.  Lil' Man got a little rolly polly during the night and although he started out next to our bed, we woke up with him out of his sleeping bag, on the hardwood, nearly under the dining room table!  What a goof!!!!

Ian and Brittany had plans this Saturday evening, so we decided to make the drive down to Los Angeles, and meet halfway with the Skidmore family at Little Ethiopia for some yummy dinner.  But before we made the drive, we spent the morning in Solvang with the Bentley's.  They had an adorable cafe there where we shared breakfast and then walked through the shops and got a few souvenirs for the kiddios.  Then we spent the remainder of the afternoon helping Ian and Brittany pack up their kitchen and belongings for Ethiopia.

I loooooove California, but the traffic reminds me too much of Seattle, lol!  No fun!  Thankfully the kiddos took a nap and watched movies.  Little Ethiopia was easy enough to find.  We got there way earlier than we planned, so we walked around and enjoyed a family Starbucks date while we waited for the Skidmore family.  Hollywood started coughing and complaining of itchy eyes, so after a call to his doctor, we found a drugstore on the corner and got some meds for him.  Poor guy was all swollen and red, but thankfully the meds kicked in and helped.

Although Mike and Chantel traveled with us in Ethiopia.  On our first trip our dates overlapped just by two days....but on the second trip we arrived only one day after them and spent the entire week together!  Our girls spent time together at Hannah's Hope as well so it was soooo special to see them together again after a whole year!!!  Mike and Chantel are the kind of people that you pick up right where you left off when you see them!  After introducing the kids, they were running around playing and we were laughing in no time!  SO glad we took the opportunity to drive down and meet them!

After a DELICIOUS dinner, we drove to a hotel.  The plan was that the kids would go swimming and then we were going to stay there for the night before heading back up to Solvang for one more afternoon with the Bentley's.  Only by the time we arrived at the hotel, Hollywood's benedryl had kicked in and he was OUT in the backseat.  I carried him up to the room, but I swear even a fire alarm wouldn't have woken him up at that point.  He crashed on the bed while the other 5 kids noisily ran around and got dressed for the pool.  Hubs went with Mike and his older 3 to the pool while Chantel and I attempted to get the little ones to sleep.  Cocoa was hyper and I quickly found that sleep was not in the cards for us anytime soon.  She was literally jumping on her brother and he was sleeping right on through!  Hahaha!

After the big kids came up and dried off, we said our goodbyes to the Skidmores and turned in for the night.  Hollywood slept the entire night on the floor next to our bed, but since the hotel didn't have an extra crib, we had Cocoa between us and didn't get much sleep.

It's going to be a sad day tomorrow saying goodbye to Cali!

Stay tuned tomorrow for our last day in California and our road trip home!
